Tuffy Mat Review

Before I start writing about this subject I have to be honest and tell you that I received a few of the mats from the Tuffy Mat Company to review. I told them upfront that I would write an unbiased review like I always do.

I am pretty messy when I am cooking on the grill and that is why I always had a mat under my grill.

For years I had an old large restaurant doormat under my grill and cleaned it several times a year with my pressure washer.

I had a look at several fireproof mats for under grills but decided to have a separate page for the Tuffy mat.

Tuffy Mat Packaging

I believe that packaging is very important and should protect the product in it. The Tuffy Mats arrived well packed and well protected at my doorsteps.

Tuffy Mat Warning

There was a piece of paper in the box that gave some warning about the Tuffy Mat and what to expect. I really appreciated that since it answered the questions I had immediately after opening the box.

Warning in the Tuffy Mat box

I thought ride away that it was hard to unroll and the smell was pretty strong.

The warning was right. After letting it sit in the sun on my patio it unrolled perfectly. The smell also disappeared as mentioned in the included brochure.

Tuffy Mat Sizes

There are a few Tuffy Mat sizes available.

  • 60 x 30 inches
  • 42 x 30 inches
  • 36 inches round.

I received two mats. One was 36 Inches round and the other 60 x 30 inches rectangle.

What I like is that the bottom side is ribbed and this will prevent it from sticking or leaving marks on your patio or deck in my opinion.

The rectangle Tuffy Mat, I placed under my grill and it will fit most standards size grills. Here you can see mine.

The round 36″ Tuffy mat I placed under my UDS (ugly drum smoker) and it fitted perfectly.

I got contacted by Dan, the owner of Tuffy mats, and he advised me to make sure that the distance under the UDS is at least 6 inches.

My Opinion About The Tuffy Mat

I am in the habit of giving my opinion in an unbiased way. So, here is my opinion of the Tuffy mat.

Pros

I like the quality very much and it seems to me that this mat will hold up for a long time.

Made in the USA. I think that is a big plus.

The second thing is the ribbed bottom. I strongly believe that will stop rainwater from running over the mat and keep it under it.

I tried washing it off with my garden hose and it went pretty well. Maybe if there is a lot of dirt you might have to use the pressure washer.

Cons

It was kind of hard to unroll the mat after taking it out of the packaging. I am, however, very impatient when it comes to these things. I guess that if I had it in the sun for a while longer it would have been easier.

The smell was strong after I took the mat out and cut off the plastic ties that keep it rolled up. It took a little longer than I expected to disappear. Since you use the mat outdoors this should not be any problem.

Tuffy Mat – Summary

Altogether I can recommend that Tuffy mat as a good buy. The price is a little higher than other mats I reviewed, but the quality is awesome.

I see in their store that you can also use the mat for many other purposes.
