They both come with the same features and the only difference is the available grill surface.

Compared to the 850 models with 850 square inches, the 1300 model has a larger cooking area of 1300 square inches They both provide a high-temperature range up to 500⁰F.

Traeger Timberline Features

Now we looked at some of the specifications I dig a little deeper as I did in my Traeger grill review and have a look at the other features.

Construction

One of the major aspects I love about the Traeger Timberline pellet grill is the heavy-duty construction.  It is made from commercial-grade stainless steel to enhance durability.

Apart from that, it has a double-walled stainless-steel lid which provides enables it to provide excellent heat retention even during cold days and reduces pellet consumption.

It features one of the industry’s brushless motors which is very powerful and durable. It also comes with a 3-year warranty to prove that it is indeed durable.

Cooking area

As compared to the Traeger Timberline 850 pellet grill the 1300 model has a bigger cooking area of 1300 square inches. The first rack has a capacity of 561 square inches while the other one has a measurement of 306 square inches.   With that capacity, you can accommodate 12 chickens, 15 rib racks, or 12 pork butts according to the manual.

The grill grates are made of porcelain for easier cleaning. This material also promotes equal distribution of heat to give you consistent results.

Hopper Sensor

I love a sensor in the hopper to keep an eye on the number of pellets left in there. The Timberland comes with and this option will give you some peace of mind on longer cooks.

Moveability

Due to the rugged construction and large cooking area, The weight is a little too high to lift.

For easier movement, it comes with rugged wheels to enhance mobility. I noticed that the front wheels are a bit small as compared to the weight of the grill. They are also smooth meaning that they are only suitable for rolling on patios or smooth surfaces.

Hopper capacity

With a hopper capacity of 24 lbs., this unit can hold enough pellets even when cooking for long hours. I enjoyed using it since it has the Traeger Pellet sensor function. This feature provides alerts when it is time to add more pellets. Again, the hopper has a trapdoor that empties it for quick pellet flavor swapping.

Excellent wood flavor

If you love foods with a perfect wood-fired flavor, the Traeger Timberline 1300 pellet grill will give you unmatched results. It uses all-natural wood pellets which gives your food an amazing flavor.

Traeger Timberline Performance

To ensure that your food is cooked uniformly and faster, it features a unique TRU Convection System which directs smoke through the specially designed channels.

There is an adjustable dual-position smoke or sear grate at the bottom. It is a great feature that I use when I want to keep the food near the fire.  I find it helpful when searing at very high temperatures. You can also place the food further away from the fire when you want to prepare slow-smoked food.

I found a video of someone using the Traeger Timberline for a while and gives an update on all the things he found out during that time.

Temperature range

Using the digital control panel, you can choose your preferred temperatures according to the type of food you are preparing.  It provides a wide temperature range from 160⁰F up to 500⁰F. This means that you can prepare all types of food using the unit.

Downdraft System

traeger timberline downdraft system

Unlike other pellet grills that I have come across, the Timberline series has a downdraft exhaust system which ensures that the smoke is flowing consistently over your food.

It makes the smoke stay way longer in your grill compared to a model with a chimney.

This creates a vortex of smoke and heat which cooks the food faster. This feature also prevents flare-ups when cooking.

Besides that, they come with a super smoke mode which I used when I need to increase the amount of smoke to achieve maximum wood-fired flavor.

D2 auger controller and meat probe

The other thing I love about this unit is the D2 controller featuring a digital display.  Through this feature, I’m able to adjust the grill temperatures in increments of 5⁰F. It also prevents occasional pellet jams. Apart from that, it delivers pellets consistently to the firepot.

Wi-Fi connectivity

When using the Traeger Timberline series pellet grills, you can access over 1,600 recipes plus tips through the WiFIRE app. Again, you can adjust the grill settings from anywhere using the app.

In the box

When I cooked on this pellet grill, the first I found was a magnetic bamboo cutting board, a user manual plus grill hooks in the package. Additionally, it comes with a meat probe for monitoring the food temperatures without opening the lid.

Pros and Cons

  • Hopper cleanout function
  • Pellet sensor
  • TRU convection system
  • Wi-Fi connectivity
  • Downdraft system
  • 3 years warranty
  • A bit expensive

Traeger Timberline Pellet Grill Review – My Opinion

With no doubt, the Traeger Timberline is among the rare pellet grills that will give you unmatched value for your money.

The 1300 model is bigger than the 850 so it is just a matter of choosing what size fits your family and type of cooking.

Both come with amazing features which make them interesting to use. Besides that, it has a rugged construction to enhance strength and durability. Just looking at the weight you can see that.

I have used many wood pellet grills but this one has one of the highest temperature ranges meaning that it is among the most versatile models on the market.

I believe that the downdraft system will be used on more pellet grills in the future. The reason is that it, in my opinion, takes care of one of the main complaints about pellet grills. The lack of smoke flavor.

In terms of price, it is a bit expensive but worth it due to the incredible features.
