A Kamado Joe grill is on many people’s wish lists which were reason enough for me to have a good look at them and write some kamado joe reviews.
Throughout the years there have been brought new Kamado Joe models on the market and I will have a look at all of them on their own page (1). However, for now, here is an overview of all the models.
If you think that you need another Kamado grill brand you can start at my Kamado Grill Reviews on that page.
Kamado Joe Features
Besides the latest model the Kettle Joe, all the other models come with about the same features.
- Ceramic heat-resistant walls
- Cast iron air vents
- High quality seal between lid and chamber
- Stiainless steel grates
- Temperature gauge in lid
- Cast iron air vent
- Easy clean-out opening
There are differences in the models that I will talk about when I come to that particular model. Let’s have a deeper dive into the models now.
Kamado Joe Junior
As the name, Junior might give away this is a smaller Kamado Joe. the grill grate has a diameter of 13.5 inches and that converts to 143 square inches if my calculation is correct.
Enough for most of the food, we cook for a small family.
The weight is a little over 75 Lbs and that makes it easy to carry with 2 people. I am thinking tailgate kamado!
Kamado Joe Classic Series
The next series that Kamado Joe made is the Classic Joe. There are 3 models in the Kamado Joe Classic. Here is an overview and after that, I will dig deeper. It is also known under the name Kamado big joe.
Kamado Joe Classic 1
The Kamado Joe Classis 1 is the first step up. That does not mean that it is better. It just means that is larger and has more added features for the more demanding backyard grill master.
Converting the 18 inches diameter comes out at about 254 square inches of available grill area.
With its weight of about 188 pounds, this is not a grill to carry around that is why it comes standard with a stand and rolling wheels.
As you can see it comes with a stand. What surprised me is that is not available in a stand-alone version as some of the other models have.
The lid is spring-loaded but still pretty heavy to open and close
Kamado Joe Classic 2
This is another upgraded model and that shows in the 250 pounds weight and the 2-tier grilling grates that will give you a lot more options to use this grill.
The Classic 2 is also available as a standalone model.
One of the main upgrades is the airlift-supported hinge. This makes it a breeze to open and close the heavy lid.
The firebox is constructed from multiple panes and according to the website, this increases the grill efficiency.
Besides that, the features are almost the same as the classic 1. I do believe that these added features give a lot more options to use this Classic 2.
Kamado Joe Classic 3
For this Kamado Joe Classic 3, I have to apologize for the blurry picture. I will try to find a better one soon.
With 286 pounds this is the heaviest and most packed version of the Classic joe series.
Compared to the other ones this one has the so-called SloRoler smoke chamber. More about that later!
it also has a 3 tiered cooking system with half-moons that gives you the option to basically grill at different temperatures at the same time.
Kamado Big Joe
The next series on this Kamado Joe reviews page is the Big Joe Series. there are 3 models and 1 of them comes also in a standalone model.
Kamado Joe Big Joe 1
The word Big gets a whole new dimension with this 250-pound heavy Kamado Joe Big Joe 1.
Although the outside is made of aluminum the weight comes from the six-piece firebox.
The renewed gasket should last 10 times longer than any other one on the market is the claim.
With 24 inches cooking grate it is one of the largest Kamado Joe’s
Kamado Joe Big Joe 2
This one ways 394 pounds. That is why it is called big joe 2.
3 levels of cooking grates and a divided reflector plate add more options by using the half-rack grill grate.
864 square inches is a large cooking area and you can cook for a whole family on different levels.
Kamado Big Joe 3
The Kamado Joe Big Joe 3 is the top of the line of this company. it comes standard with the SloRoller system and the multi-level grill grates and the ceramic halved reflectors.
24 inches and a sturdy cart is included. There is also an ash slide-out drawer instead of the ones that you have to use as the ash tool.
Kamado Joe Kettle
The latest model is the Kamado Joe Kettle.
This model is made of steel but had a ceramic firebox. It comes with the SloRoller hyperbolic chamber. This can be removed and all you have to do is adjust the thing of the lid to bring it down to the right level.
22 inches and 363 square inches is the grill surface and the cart is attached to the grill. It weighs 121 pounds but with the wheels, it is very easy to move around.
The full name is Kamado Joe pellet grill but the name above is what most people call it.
The first thing I looked at was the price and it is pretty steep compared to the regular pellet grills I reviewed. But then I realized that ceramic is always higher in price.
Since this one uses pellets it is controlled by a thermostat. I read that it can get up to 600 degrees and that means it should be good for searing a steak.
The pellet hopper is located at the bottom and I still have to figure out how it works. Later on, I will do this on its own page and dig really deep in this Pellet Joe.
Kamado Joe SloRoller
As I mentioned a few times I would dig a little more into this patented SloRoller Hyperbolic Smoke Chamber.
Basically, you add this feature, and the airflow in the grill changes in a way that it circulates longer before it reaches the air vent and leaves the grill.
According to the Kamado Joe website, this will add a more even absorption of the smoke and will give a more consistent temperature.
it is also for sale as an add-on to your existing kamado Joe
Although the models that Kamado Joe offers are all ready to go when delivered there are also accessories for them on the market that can extend the possibilities in what type of food and how to cook it you have.
To mention a few I made a shortlist and I will have a good look at them separately. It will, however, only fit Classic 1 and 2. The Classic 3 comes standard with some of these features.
- Kamado Joe Classic rotisserie (JoeTissery)
- Kamado Joe DoJoe (Pizza stone)
- Kamado Joe heat deflector (2 pieces)
There are many more Kamado Joe accessories and you can find them all on the link above.
Kamado Joe Review – My Opinion
I have cooked on several Kamado-style grills and liked many of them and some I was not too happy with.
After having a good look at the Kamado Joe in several stores I had a good look at the overall quality and compared this to the price you have to pay for them.
I know that most Kamado grills are not cheap but in most cases, you get what you pay for and in the case of Komodo Joe, I strongly believe what you pay for and even more.
I realize that I just gave a short description of al the Kamado Joe grills here. I will review all of them on their own page and you can read all the nitty-gritty details there.
