Cooking outside is one of the most popular outdoor activities in the US. There are several ways of doing that and here are 4 of the most popular ways.

What type of way is the best is a question that is impossible to answer. It all depends on our own preferences and the available time and room.

4 Popular Ways To Prepare Food Outdoors

There are more than 5 ways to cook outdoors but here I limit it to the 5 categories I use here on the Better Grills website.

Grilling

I think it is safe that this without a doubt the most popular way to prepare food outside. But as always there are several types of grills and this makes it able to choose exactly the one that fits your needs. You can find many of them in my outdoor grill reviews.

There are many types of grills to choose from and they come in all sizes. it all depends on what you like to cook and for how many people. Here are some grills that you can use.

  • Charcoal (Briquettes and lump)
  • Propane
  • Natural gas
  • Electric
  • Pellets

Smoking

Although you can in some cases use a grill as a smoker I think it is better to use a smoker that is built and optimized for the so-called low and slow you do on a smoker.

One of the smokers that are gaining popularity fast is pellet smokers. I did many pellet smoker reviews to help you find the one you need.

There are quite a few smokers on the market and that makes it sometimes hard to find the one that fits you the best. Here are some types of smokers.

  • Pellet smokers
  • Offset smokers
  • Electric smokers

Kamado Grills

I love to cook on a Kamado grill and the reason is that they are very versatile. I could actually also add them to the smoking section on this page.

The prices I found in my Kamado grill reviews show that you pay a steep price in most cases. However, with the fact that you can use them as a grill, smoker, and for some brands, even as a pizza oven I think it is worth the money.

Open Fire Cooking

I have not written a lot about this kind of cooking yet, but I made my first content about over the fire cooking. I am getting started with it and have a lot of things to learn. I just bought my first Dutch Oven and am reading how to use it.

Open-fire cooking is a huge category and the options are almost unlimited for cooking outdoors on a fire. Here are a few options.

  • Live fire cooking
  • Fire pit cooking
  • Cooking on a bed of coals and embers

Many tools are available and later I will write about campfire cooking equipment in another post.

Summary

Now I have more time to cook outdoors and to be honest, also starting to feel a little more confident about it I am exploring more ways to cook outside. It is the combination of fresh air and playing with fire that attracts me to this type of cooking.
